After unravelling the mystery behind the identity of ‘Government Official 1’ by the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling party has stated that there is already enough evidence to jail the culprit.
Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako explained that it is already out that the purchase of the Airbus happened under former President Mahama and if the international company has detected some form of fraud in the transaction, it is enough grounds to use our court process to jail the former President.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman known as Chairman Wontumi stated “it is sad some people are in Ghana defending the fraudulent act of over €5 million that occured under the regime of John Mahama. Do you think the court in UK, USA and France that sat on the matter is incompetent. Spare me this childish reasoning. John Mahama must speak on the matter or go to jail, he won’t be spared”.
Last week, Airbus entered into a deferred prosecution agreement, with the British Serious Fraud Office (SFO), which was investigating the company for bribing or failing to prevent corruption in transactions in five countries, including Ghana.
Under the agreement the British SFO agreed to suspend the prosecution of Airbus for a period of three years. If Airbus complies with the terms of the agreement within the period, the prosecution will be discontinued.
In a related development, the Communications Director of NPP, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, on Monday said Mr. Mahama should tell the country what he knows about GO1 and the processes leading to the purchase of the aircraft form Airbus SE.
“ . . Notwithstanding the referral to the OSP, it is important to note that the former Hon Attorney General’s intervention on behalf of candidate Mahama is very weak and unable to directly respond to the hard facts as put out by the United Kingdom Serious Fraud Office (SFO). It is therefore necessary that former President, now Candidate John Dramani Mahama responds directly to the issue himself,” he stressed.
According to the NPP, the serious nature and processes involved in the accusations demand immediate action to remove any dents on the image and reputation of Ghana.
“The companies used to receive the bribe money have been named. The shareholder who is very close to the former President has been named. Document falsification, kickbacks, lies and overpayments is what the Airbus scandal is all about. And it appears John Mahama is deeply involved.
“Candidate Mahama is no stranger to speaking to the international community. He has been known to assemble diplomats even if he has nothing to say except lies as demonstrated in the false tapes saga of Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituteuncy matters,” he said.
Reacting to statement, the Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi replied that no government official under the erstwhile Mills-Mahama regime have been cited for bribery in the Airbus corruption scandal.
According to him, the allegation of bribery against former President Mahama and the NDC in the issue is completely baseless and the distortion of facts.
He stated that no ex-government official has named in corrupt, therefore challenging any person to prove “the part of the judgment which says that bribe was paid to the so-called unnamed government official 1 or any person.
