A constituency Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is fighting for his life after he, together with the Member of Parliament for Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa in the Central, Anthony Effah, was beaten by some angry youth in the area.
Local reports say the MP and his entourage had gone to stop some young men who had illegally mounted a barrier on a bridge leading to the town.
The young men, according to Adom News’ Central Regional correspondent, Alfred Amoh were charging an illegal toll of GH₵3.00 as a precondition for allowing any vehicle to cross the bridge.
The MP who was then in the company of the District Chief Executive and some NPP executives tried to stop the young men from perpetuating the illegality.
However, the peaceful intervention turned violent and the young men subjected them to massive beatings.
The Youth Organizer who was leading the charge was beaten to a pulp and had to be rushed to the Our Lady of Grace Hospital for medical attention.
Hon. Effah and his driver who tried to intervene also had the share of the beatings.
The MP was slightly beaten and his driver suffered an eye injury and was also rushed to the hospital, Alfred reported.
Even more shocking, Alfred said, was when the angry youth turned their guns on the police personnel who were deployed to the scene to ensure law and order.
The boys charged on the police after they arrested one of them. They beat them and the suspect who was in a handcuff escaped, Alfred Amoh added.
Breman Asikuma District Police Commander, Superintendent Isaac Donkor Baah confirmed the news of the assault to Adom News.
He said his men have mounted a manhunt for the suspect who escaped in a handcuff.
Supt Donkor Baah assured the police will bring anyone found culpable to book.
