NDC Caucus Boiling; Muntaka Releases Statement To Counter Haruna Iddrisu As Debate Over e-levy Intensifies

It appears the NDC caucus in Parliament at the moment is finding it difficult to attain common ground as debate over the controversial e-transactions levy intensifies.

Since the Finance Minister presented the 2022 budget last week, the NDC had vehemently opposed the proposed e-levy, insisting that they were not going to approve the budget unless it is scrapped completely.

The minority caucus subsequently managed to get the budget rejected after their colleagues on the other side had staged a walkout.

In the days that followed, the majority caucus also had their way by overruling the Minority’s earlier rejection of the budget and adopting same.

Though issues surrounding the budget is far from concluded, minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu beat a sudden retreat yesterday when he said that he is now convinced after holding discussion with the finance minister that the e-levy is not so bad after all.

Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, though, pleaded with government to consider bringing the tax down from 1.75% to 1%.

However, it appears the Tamale South MP is completely on his own here as the minority chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak has released a statement saying the minority is still maintaining their earlier position of rejecting the e-levy in it’s entirety.

Muntaka’s press release has been endorsed by some minority MPs including MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George who shared the release on his social media platform.

It is unclear if the minority will meet over the impasse, but as things stand, the leadership of the minority caucus may be heading towards an internal crisis.
