Kotoko’s Dr Amo Sarpong banned for 6 months

The Disciplinary Committee (DC) of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended Dr Yaw Amo Sarpong, Policy Analyst of Asante Kotoko, from all football matches and competitions for six months with immediate effect pursuant to Article 39.1(a) of the GFA General Regulations.

This was after the DC had found Dr Sarpong guilty of misconduct, having pleaded not guilty to the charge of wrongfully wielding a gun at a match venue by the GFA prosecutor, Raphael Tottimeh.

The DC, chaired by Samson Lardy Anyenini, last Thursday, however, revoked the earlier temporary ban which was handed the victim hours after firing gunshots during the Normalisation Committee (NC) special competition match day 9 game between Berekum Chelsea and Kotoko at the Golden City Park on Sunday, April 28.

Dr Sarpong, who attended the sitting in the company of his lawyer, admitted to going for his gun from his car boot and firing four times into the air in self-defence, as well as admitting in his testimony that he exercised wrong judgement when he announced publicly that he was calling for police reinforcement by picking his phone and placing a call to the Regional Police Commander.

The DC described that action to be wrong judgement on the part of the defendant since he put himself in harms way by the said announcement and the subsequent action of firing the gun, regardless of the complained provocation.

‘This conduct he admits before the GFADC was wrong because he ought to have complained about the alleged inadequate security at the venue to the Match Commissioner.

“The GFADC notes that much as he may have meant well in the said intervention, it was not within his power or jurisdiction to personally assume such responsibility and proceed to announce publicly that he was calling for police reinforcement to the Berekum Golden City Park,” it added.

“This conduct, the GFADC finds improper, irregular and contrary to standard procedure.”
