Joseph Kofi Damtse has broken ranks with the governing New Patriotic Party by deciding to contest as an independent parliamentary candidate.
Mr. Damtse who was disqualified by the party’s vetting committee said he arrived at that painful decision due to incessant pressure from his teeming supporters and financiers.
Widespread media reports indicate that Joseph Damtse was disqualified from the party’s primaries following his declaration of intent to contest as an Independent Candidate in the 2016 general elections in a series of press conferences he held after losing the 2015 primaries.
Declaration of intent to run as an Independent Candidate is considered a serious breach of the party’s and further a breach of the Undertaking of Parliamentary Aspirants signed to pledge loyalty regardless of the outcome of such contests.
Earlier this week, some key supporters of Damtse had through radio interviews and Whatsapp chats with sympathisers, hinted of his dissatisfaction with the disqualification process and had left the party’s fold.
Speaking on Assin-based Splash FM today, June 11, 2020, Mr. Damtse affirming the decision to contest said he was motivated by calls from supporters and financiers to run as Independent Candidate.
“What my supporters ask me to do is what I will do. They’re right to push for me to contest. I haven’t seen the posters but I’m telling you that I’ll always heed to the calls from my supporters. I will always listen to their pleas for me to contest. I will never turn my back on them,” he told host Kofi Tease.
