Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has promised that when it is elected to form a government in the future, it shall prosecute all government officials involved in deliberately defrauding the country through the shambolic implementation of the one village one dam policy of this current government.
Addressing the Moment of Truth Series in one of the dams in Nakpachee in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region, Communications Officer of the NDC Sammy Gyamfi described the policy as a scam, a dissipation of the taxpayers’ money, insisting that the dams are not fit for purpose.
He disclosed that the Minister for Special Development Initiative, Mavis Hawa Koomson, and other government officials involved in the construction of the dams will face prosecution and possibly thrown into jail in a future NDC government.
The implementation of the one village one dam policy meant to promote dry season farming throughout the year in northern Ghana, has come under criticism with many describing the dams as dugouts unfit for irrigation purposes.
The NDC has constantly argued that the policy was a ruse to get votes from the people of northern Ghana since it was not feasible to have functioning dams in every village in northern Ghana.
But the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives led by Mavis Hawa Koomson has argued that the dams are generally serving their purpose with a few uncompleted, insisting that the drying up of some is as a result of the vagaries of the weather.
