Grace Omaboe popularly known as Maame Dokono is a former member of the opposition National Democratic Congress NDC. According to history, Maame Dokono and Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings were two powerful women who Teamed Up to use creative arts as a tool in brightening the political fortunes of Jerry John Rawlings.
According to Vim Lady Afia Pokuaa, it was through the influence of Konadu Agyemang Rawlings which got Maame Dokono to organise BY THE FIRESIDE on a state television GTV. Not only was the storytelling show broadcasted on National TV. It was also supported by the 31st December Women’s Movement. The then women advocacy group was sponsored by the then NDC government.
Through Maame Dokono’s show, Konadu Agyemang Rawlings was able to count one achievement for Rawlings. Yes, a big achievement. Shaping the creative arts was something at the heart of many Ghanaians.
If Rawlings and the NDC sponsored a program that educated Ghanaians through storytelling, what stops them from voting for him? Jerry John Rawlings fortunes kept brightening until early 2000.
Sadly, Maame Dokono abandoned the Rawlings to join NPP in her quest to become an MP. Her campaign against the NDC was capitalized on by the NPP.
Well, there is freedom of expression and Association. However, the Rawlings fortunes and legacy can never be written without Konadu and Maame Dokono.
