The Ashanti Regional Chairperson of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo has disclosed that some 13 doctors in the country have been infected with the deadly novel coronavirus.
According to him, the doctors contracted the virus whilst administering treatment to infected patients.
He, therefore, advised Ghanaians not to joke with the virus and adhere to all safety directives outlined by the government and the Ghana Health Service to save the lives of many.
“About thirteen doctors have been infected on the job as of Wednesday. We shouldn’t joke with this virus. Some people think it’s a joke or because Ghanaians are not dying we have some favour. The two-week lockdown helped us trace contacts and most of the people are in the younger age group. Of 100 infected people in the country, 8 or 10 are in critical condition.”
Dr. Baidoo further explained that all the eleven people who died had underlying health conditions and rebuked the notion that no young person can die of the virus.
“When they come we give them critical care. The efficacy of the virus depends on a person’s immune systems. The few people who have died had other conditions but it doesn’t mean if you are young and have no conditions you won’t die,” he said.
Ghana has so far recorded 1,550 cases with 11 deaths and 155 recoveries. 12 out of the 16 regions have recorded COVID-19 cases with the epicentre being the Greater Accra Region with 1,347 cases.
