An activist of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Kofi Adoli has stated that President Nana Akufo-Addo’s insistence on naming the University for Development Studies(UDS) after the late President Jerry John Rawlings is to prepare the grounds to name the University of Ghana after JB Danquah, a founding father of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), the political party to which the New Patriotic Party(NPP) traces its roots.
At the final funeral rites of the deceased former leader of the country, President Akufo-Addo in his tribute announced that an agreement had been reached with the family of Mr Rawlings to the effect that the University for Development Studies in Tamale be named after him.
“Two days after his passing, at the 21st Congregation of UDS, I expressed my strongest convictions, in spite of his reservations, that such an honour should be accorded him. I am glad that this has found favour with his family, and the necessary formalities will be carried out to achieve this, i.e. The Jerry John Rawlings University of Development Studies, Tamale.” President Akufo-Addo announced on Wednesday at the Independence Square.
But in a sharp reply to the announcement, Mr Adoli said the President by his insistence to rename UDS after Rawlings is to lay the foundation to rename the University of Ghana after JB Danquah, an idea that did not find much favour with Ghanaians when it was first rumoured a few years ago.
“The whole reason for trying so hard to name a university after Rawlings is to put Danquah’s name on the University of Ghana,” he wrote on social media.
Rawlings, while alive, rejected a proposal by President Akufo-Addo to name UDS after him, explaining that among others, he did not want a national institution to be named after him.
Several universities have been renamed after prominent political figures under the tenure of President Akufo-Addo.
The announcement of the renaming of UDS has been met with mixed reactions.
