Akua Donkor’s presence on presidential ballot paper draws wild laughter

Twelve (12) presidential candidates, including Madam Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) known more for her comic value and political romance with governments, have been cleared by the Electoral Commission (EC) to contest the 2020 general elections.

In the peculiar case of Madam Akua Donkor, she has no known party office, no national or regional party executives and party activities, including congresses.

It is unclear, how she even got the GH¢100,000 filing fee for Presidential aspirants, since she has no known gainful employment in her name. It is also unclear, if the EC, has been going through her records per the Political Parties Law Act 574, (2000). It is further unclear how, how she secured the signatures of voters by way of her endorsement to contest.

But the mention of Madam Akua Donkor and the point that she had made it onto the presidential ballot paper drew wild laughter from both reporters and officials of the EC, when its Chairperson, Jean Mensa announced at a press briefing in Accra, Monday, October 19, 2020.

She has desperately tried to be on the ballot for years to no avail, while flirting with every ruling political party, and also had stint with Jerry Rawlings’ Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) in the 1980s as a state informant in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.

In 2016, she took on Madam Charlotte Osei for disqualifying her, the National Democratic Party’s Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings and some others.

At the time, she was mad at the sacked EC boss, but that beef has since been transferred to ex-President John Mahama, whom she has accused of masterminding her disqualification, while professing her love for Nana Akufo-Addo of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), whom she in the past severely abused.

But Akua Donkor adds up to two other female candidates, leader of the National Democratic Party, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings and Flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party, Brigitte Dzogbenuku (PPP) who filed nominations to compete in the presidential race in the December 7 polls, have all been given the green light by the EC to contest.

The three women, have been named amongst 12 candidates, who have been officially cleared by the EC to contest in the upcoming general elections.

The male version of Madam Akua Donkor is Percival Kofi Akpaloo of LPG, who has also made it onto the presidential ballot paper.

Jean Mensa, disclosed that though some of the candidates had some technical and IT issues with their forms, they were able to address them within the stipulated period.

This implies that five of the 17 nominees who submitted their nomination forms with the hope of contesting in the polls, have been disqualified.

The five disqualified candidates, include two independent presidential nominees; Kofi Koranteng and Marricke Kofi Gane, and three political party-sponsored nominees; Akwasi Addae Odike of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Kwasi Busumbru of the People’s Action Party (PAP), and Nana Agyenim Boateng of the United Front Party (UFP).

The returning officer for the 2020 presidential election, Jean Mensa, announced this at the Electoral Commission’s “Let the People Know Forum” on Monday, October 19, 2020.

The 12 presidential candidates who sailed through were, Alfred Kwame Asiedu Walker – Independent candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of NPP, Christian Kwabena Andrews of GUM, Brigitte Akosua Dzogbenuku of PPP, John Dramani Mahama of NDC, Akua Donkor of GFP and Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings of NDP.
