Security forces have arrested 17 Burkinabes for attempting to sneak into Ghana from their home country.
Their arrest was effected around 18:30GMT on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the Babile inland checkpoint in the Upper West Region, the Ghana Immigration Service said on Saturday night.
The foreign nationals were on board a bus with registration number AS 5603-C when they were intercepted by the Immigration Service.
Those arrested include six women and 11 men aged between 20 and 40 years.
Officials have begun steps to repatriate them to Burkina Faso on Sunday, according to the Lawra Municipal Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, ASI Kingsford Agyekumhene.
The government of Ghana tightened border restrictions following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The two-week border closure took effect on March 22 and was to expire on April 5, 2020 but has been extended by an additional two weeks by President Akufo-Addo.
Ghana and Burkina Faso are both working to contain the spread of the deadly virus. Ghana has recorded 214 cases as of April 5, 2020 with five deaths and two recoveries.
Burkina Faso, which shares boundary with Ghana up north has recorded 302 with 16 deaths and 48 recoveries.
